I. List of Security police duties:

  1. Manage the scheduling, training, and operations of the full-time uniformed police and security staff; review and approve all reports prepared by subordinates and coordinate appropriate follow-up as appropriate.  Develop and implement policies and procedures in accordance with the community policing model and accreditation standards to ensure that staff are properly trained and police and security services are provided consistently.  Ensure prompt, thorough and coordinated response to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, sharing information and coordinating response by local, state and federal public safety agencies.  Serve as field incident commander during emergencies.
  2. Coordinate and manage the process for hiring new staff and promotions of existing staff, including planning and coordinating training for newly appointed personnel and annual in-service training to ensure proper standards of knowledge and skill and compliance with local, state and federal laws and regulations.  Prepare and implement written directives, evaluate staff and document all training provided for Department personnel in accordance with Accreditation standards.  Ensure compliance with MGL 22c, Section 68 and related CMR 501 regulations for all staff holding commissions as Special State Police Officers.
  3. Implement and manage a program of regular inspection, testing and maintenance of all electronic security system technology utilized by the Department, including card access equipment, closed circuit television cameras and recording equipment, duress alarm and intrusion detection systems, emergency telephones, etc.  Plan for and oversee design and procurement of equipment in new and renovated facilities and elsewhere as appropriate.
  4. Assist the Chief in all aspects of the administration of the Department, including payroll, budget preparation and oversight, procurement, Card Management services, records management and Clery Act compliance.  May be assigned to conduct Clery Act training for campus staff meeting criteria for “Campus Security Authorities” and responsibility for preparation of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.  Assist the Chief, University Emergency Manager and other university officials in developing and implementing emergency action plans and conducting drills and after-action reports.  Develop action plans for major events and serve as the Department’s alternate member of the Incident Command Core Team. 
  5. Develop and maintain partnerships with campus constituencies, especially Student Affairs and Residence Life staff, as well as local, state and federal law enforcement and public safety agencies and community organizations; develop and implement protocols to ensure that all members of the Department are trained in recognizing students and other persons of concern and that appropriate professional staff are notified promptly; serve on university committees and participate in local, regional, national and international campus public safety professional associations in order to remain knowledgeable in best practices and emerging issues in campus public safety.
II. List of Security police qualifications
  1. Significant law enforcement and security management experience is required, and preference will be given to candidates with management experience in a campus law enforcement agency.
  2. Must be eligible for and obtain certification as a Special State Police Officer within three months of appointment, and must retain such certification.
  3. Must obtain a License to Carry Firearms or Firearms Identification Card within three months of appointment and must retain such permit.
  4. Must possess and retain a Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator License.
  5. Must be able to work flexible hours and shifts and be on call 24 hours a day every day.
  6. May be required to undergo annual physical examination.
  7. May be required to undergo pre-employment psychological evaluation and drug testing and periodic testing or evaluation for cause.
