I. List of Police sergeant duties:

  1. Supervises sworn police officers and non-sworn department employees.
  2. Assists in developing and managing annual budget, including general funds, equipment, grants, and other programs and projects.
  3. Acts as Incident Commander during police operations in the absence of the Director of Police and Safety Services
  4. Compiles information and data in order to prepare a wide variety of reports, including those for various governmental agencies on county, state and federal levels.

  10. Conduct investigations of complex campus crimes and coordinate criminal investigations with the District Attorney’s Office, Probation and Parole Departments as well as all other criminal justice agencies.
  11. Receives incident reports for follow-up investigation to include contacting witnesses, victims, and suspects for interview and /or interrogation.
  12. Prepares and presents to the court requests for search and arrest warrants.
  13. Serves search and arrest warrants.
  14. Acts as watch commander during assigned shifts.
  15. Investigates service complaints and recommends appropriate remedial action.
  16. Develops, evaluates, and manages projects. Assigns tasks to others in order to complete each project.
  17. May serve as the direct liaison with local law enforcement agencies.
  18. Implements College, Departmental, Divisional, and Unit goals and policies.
II. List of Police sergeant qualifications

  1. Intermediate Texas Police Officer Certification;
  2. Texas Police Instructor License;
  3. Field Training Officer Certificate;
  4. FEMA ICS-100,200,700 and 800;
  5. Two additional specialized certifications:
  6. 2,000 TCLEOSE-approved training hours;
  7. Must have made passing scores on all applicable entrance tests;
  8. Valid Texas Class C Driver's License with a safe driving record (no more than 3 moving violations in the past 36 months); no record of DWI, DUI, or license suspension with the past five years;
  9. No convictions other than traffic as an adult; and
  10. No convictions other than Class C Misdemeanors as a juvenile.
  11. Five years uniformed police patrol experience;
  12. Must be bondable;
  13. Must have a good knowledge of criminal laws and local ordinances;
  14. Skilled in the use and care of firearms, vehicles, and other common police equipment;
  15. Basic to intermediate computer skills to include the use of iPads;
  16. Knowledge of first aid; and the ability to gain compliance with the law in a positive manner; and
  17. Have favorable performance evaluations from current agency with most recent performance evaluation rating as highly competent performer.
  18. Completion of police leadership courses;
  19. Completion of TCLEOSE New Supervisor’s Course
  20. Field Training Coordinator certification
